Lines of Research

The Graduate Program in Film – PPGCine has two general lines of research:

L1

Narratives and Aesthetics

  • This line of research seeks to address topics centered on the materiality of the audiovisual object, its narrative dimension and languages. In this sense, it starts from the field of aesthetics, from the plastic and pictorial aspects of film image, proposing reflections on interfaces with other areas of the artistic (the issue of atmosphere and cinematographic space) and cultural fields, and motivating critical reflection on visual and sound aesthetics. It gathers reflections on the narrative dimension in film and audiovisual, as well as the study of genres in the most diverse formats and platforms, combining a tradition of narrative and language studies in film, television, and contemporary audiovisual media.

L2

History and Politics

  • The line investigates film and audiovisual and its relations with other fields of knowledge based on historical and political issues and perspectives. Here the archives, the economy, education, as well as the features film acquires as a “media that thinks” and transits between the arts and thought, are topics of reflection. Are addressed here: sound and image as arenas of cultural and political mediation; the issue of preservation and the “cinema situation” in its consecrated forms; reception studies, room architecture and new imaging and sound devices, including the multiplicity of screens and other media. We approach distribution and production policies from an economic point of view and their intersections with public policies. We also investigate audiovisual practices and their contributions to subjective and political processes.
